Steve Spence has been a licensed coach since 1999. In the late 1990s, he was one of only a handful of coaches in the Ottawa area to have earned an OSA "C license". He upgraded his license to a Provincial "B" in June 2003 in Toronto.
Going into his fourth year of coaching with the Ottawa Fury, Steve is now the Head Coach of the 2007-2008 U16 boys team following two years of coaching the 2006 U16 boys and the 2007 U17 Boys. In 2006, his first year with the U16 boys, the team qualified for the prestigous North American SYL Finals in Tampa, Florida, and this past season the U17 boys came within 45 minutes of returning to the Finals for a rare second year in a row.
In his first two years with the Fury, Steve coached the Fury's first ever U14 girls team in 2004 and in the following year the U15 girls narrowly missed qualifying for the Finals by finishing third.
Before joining the Ottawa Fury, Steve spent five years with Kanata Soccer where he coached (among other teams) a team of local 1988 girls from U10 until U14. Not only did this local Kanata team earn qualification and compete in the OYSL by finishing fourth in the Toronto-based CGSL (prior to the ERSL), eight of its members went on to play for the Fury. Steve has coached many players who have gone on to earn lucrative college athletic scholarships.
Steve also spent two years with the Ontario Soccer Association as a Staff Coach and Coach Instructor.
Steve has extensive program management as well as soccer coaching experience. He has developed, operated, and coached many player development programs for high performance athletes as well as for entry-level players. In the area of sports management, Steve has held senior positions with Kanata Soccer as both Director of Player and Coach Development (1996 to 2001) and Vice President (2003), and has provided technical and strategic assistance to other soccer programs in the community.
When he is not coaching, Steve runs a Kanata-based high-tech company called "NorthSeas".
